Sashiko Patching and Mending

Learn how to patch and repair a rip or hole, reinforce a worn area, and prepare distressed fibers in order to draw a Sashiko pattern of their choice.

Sashiko is a Japanese Mending, Quilting, and Embroidery practice. With humble beginnings in rural Japan, Sashiko’s “small stabs” of hand-stitching insulated and repaired work garments, bedding, and winter wear for strength and longevity. It continues as a contemporary handwork skill to mend, reinforce, and embellish textiles.

A simple running stitch with a grid as its guide creates bold, geometric patterns on textiles. Choose from a variety of traditional Sashiko patterns inspired by nature, architecture, and culture; tiny plus signs, star stitch, rice stitch, or woven tortoise.

Bring in a couple items from home to assess for mending or decorating. Areas to repair should be no larger than four inches. Denim takes well to Sashiko stitching. Other natural fibers of medium-weight cotton or linen are also ideal for hand-stitching.  Please no sweaters, knits, shiny, silky, nor stretchy fabrics. Denim with a bit of Spandex is fine.

A take-home kit includes; a pair of Sashiko needles, patching fabric, a pattern ‘zine, plus access to all the colorful threads and necessary communal tools and materials.

All skill levels are welcome! Everyone will work at their own pace, choosing stitching patterns that suit their design aesthetic and comfort level.

This class requires a minimum of four people to run.

• Full tuition is due at time of registration.

• Visiting instructor refund policy: You may withdraw from a class and receive a full refund, minus 4% processing fees, up to 7 days before class begins.  After that time AND UP TO 72 HOURS BEFORE CLASS, you will receive a refund (minus 4% processing fees) ONLY if we can fill your spot. You are also welcome to transfer your enrollment to a friend. Cancellations within 72 hours of class and no-shows are not eligible for refunds or class credit.

• If we need to cancel a class you will receive a full refund.
