Sock Darning
Feb 8 from 11am-1:30pm
DARNING
Learn how to save your $25 hiking socks, or your priceless handmade socks.
Darning is a timeless method of filling in holes by weaving a fabric patch over the hole. Join us to learn how to fix your own clothes in a low pressure, hands-on class. We’ll be focusing on visible mending, so there is space to play with colors and patterns. Sock darning is a great place to start because theres little pressure to make it look "perfect" on the first try, or even on the tenth try!
Bring a clean sock to darn so your can learn while you fix your sock. For your first sock, please don’t bring a sock that has a hole bigger than a nickel. It’s better to learn on a small hole rather than a blown out heel.
If you’d rather not work on a sock, we can set you up with an embroidery hoop and fabric to learn on.
The teacher will bring a speedweve-style darning loom, if you have ever wanted to try one out. But she’ll also show how to improvise a darning “egg” with a number of household objects. Darning is beautifully low tech and all that is really needed is a needle and yarn/thread.
Each student should bring:
A metal tapestry needle and a small pair of scissors.
Optional items: yarn scraps in fingering or sport weight. A darning egg or mushroom. A sock to darn (see note above)
Provided
A variety of yarn scraps and darning forms.
This class requires 2 people to run.
